More than 5000 NGOs Functioning in Uzbekistan

www.gzt.uz – “A conference on “Role and Significance of Independent NGOs in the Process of Democratic Renovation of Uzbekistan” was held at the Legislative Chamber (LC) – Lower House of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan on July 11 2008,” said an Information Group official under the Institute for Study of Civil Society (ISCS).
The conference was organized by the Legislative Chamber in cooperation with ISCS, the National Centre for Human Rights and the Liberal-Democratic Party of Uzbekistan. LC deputies, the Senate – Upper House members, representatives of ISCS, National Association of NGOs, Mahalla and Nuroniy Foundations, the Women’s Committee, the Youth Social Movement Kamolot  and political parties took part at the conference.
It was noted that the role of NGOs in establishing democratic values and forming civil society  in the country is valuable. A legal basis has been created for this purpose, in particular 10 special laws and by-laws have been adopted.  
For the time being more than 5000 NGOs function in different spheres of the society and they push interests of the wide strata of the population. Such NGOs as Kamolot, Women’s Committee, Mahalla and Nuroniy foundations have a considerable support amongst the population.
For a consolidation and financial support of NGOs the National Association of NGOs has been set up.
In the process of the conference a number of speeches was made by both Uzbek MP and NGOs representatives.
